“I’m sorry Lawrence.” Kathleen told me, “You need to focus on your studies first. Look at your grades. You’re flunking.”. “Kathleen, listen to me. If ever I flunked, it’s not because of you. I’m just to busy with all the work here.” I said. “I made up my mind. It’s over.” she said. And that was the last time we talked.
Sophia, my bestfriend, sat down with me during lunch. “Is there something wrong?”, she asked me. “Kathleen and I broke up.” I answered. “Ohh.” and that was the only thing Sophia said.
3 weeks later
“Lawrence,” Sophia said, “I have something I have always wanted to tell you.”. “What is it?” I asked. “You’re my bestfriend, but now… I realized…” she said, “I’ve fallen in love with you. I’m sorry…”. And all I did was to smile.
The next day
“Sophia.” I said. “Yes?” Sophia replied. “Do you have any plans tonight?” I asked.
“None. Why?”
“Let’s go out…on a date.”
“Date?”
“Yes. Do you accept?”
“Pick me up tonight at 7 pm.”
“That sounds good.”
Sophia and I dated for about two weeks. Things got serious and we officially became a couple. I excelled in my academics because of Sophia. Every afternoon, she would come over our house to tutor me.
A week before our second monthsary, Kathleen called me. “Hello? May I speak with Lawrence?”, she asked. “Speaking.” I said. “It’s me, Kathleen.” she said, “Lawrence, do you remember why I broke up with you?”. “Because my grades were flunking.” I answered. “But look, you’re doing great now. Lawrence, after three months, my feelings haven’t changed. I still love you.” she told me. “I still love you, too.” I answered and she hung up.
On our second monthsary
“Happy monthsary, sweety.” Sophia said as she hugged me tight. “Sophia, we need to talk.” I told her as I held her hand and looked in her eyes. “What’s the problem?” she asked me. “A week ago, Kathleen called me.” I said, “She wants me back. She still loves me and I still love her, too.”. “What about me? What about us? ”, she asked me as tears fell from her eyes. “I never wanted to use you.” I explained, “I thought I would learn to love you… Someday…”. “I knew from the start that it was all about her… THIS WAS NEVER ABOUT US… About me… About you wanting to love me…”, she told me as tears continued to run on her cheeks. “I’m sorry.” I said. It’s the only thing I can tell her. I know it’s not enough, but there’s nothing else I can say. “Goodbye.” she said and she ran away.
Kathleen and I got back with each other but I couldn’t stop thinking about Sophia. I went to their residence but she didn’t want to see me.
3 months later
The doorbell rang and I opened the door. I saw no one. Instead, I saw a box. I opened the box and saw a lot of letters.
Letter #1
Dear Lawrence,
I really enjoyed the date we had tonight. Thank you for the wonderful experience. I never imagined this could happen. Thank you. Take care.
I love you.
Sophia
“Sophia,” I said, “Letters from Sophia?”. I continued to read the letters until I reached the last one.
Dear Lawrence,
There’s a secret I’ve kept from you for a long time. I have a serious heart disease. My heart is weak and any minute from now, it can stop beating. I never told you this because I don’t want you to love me because of pity. I’m sorry Lawrence.
Sophia
“Heart disease? Sophia has a heart disease? No! this.. couldn’t be… Sophia… no…”. I went to their residence to see her but she wasn’t there. Her parents said she was rushed to the hospital because she fainted 2 days ago. They gave me the hospital address and her room number. I hurriedly went to the hospital and ran to her room.
Finally…
“Lawrence…” Sophia whispered. “Yes. It’s me.” I said as tears ran down my cheeks, “I’m sorry Sophia. You’re the one who I really love. Please don’t leave me.”. “Lawrence…” she said. I held her hand tightly, not wanting her to go. “I love you”, she told me… Then her heart stopped beating. She left me… “Rest in peace, my love.”, I told her as I cried by her side.
By the way, I am Kathleen. I just reading Lawrence’s diary. I found this on his room a week ago. But this story remains unfinished…
Two weeks after Sophia died, Lawrence found no pleasure in living. After attending Sophia’s funeral, everyone went home. When he crossed the crossed the street, he got hit by a truck. When he was rushed to the hospital, he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
I wish I never broke up with him. I REGRET letting him go…
